Tonglen Meditation
The Tibetan practice of exchange: breathing IN the suffering of another — or one's own, or the world's — as heavy, hot darkness, and breathing OUT relief, spaciousness, and wellbeing toward them. Reverses the instinct to push pain away; compassion trained at the level of the breath. Minutes at a time, on the cushion or in the moment suffering appears.
Prerequisites
- Stability in basic breath meditation first — tonglen turns toward what most practice turns from
- Begin with mild suffering and someone easy to love; the classic instruction is to start where compassion already flows
- With overwhelming or traumatic material, breathing it in can flood — shrink the dose, return to the out-breath, or set the practice down; this is advanced practice by design

Origin & where it lives
Tibetan Buddhist lojong tradition (Atiśa lineage); widely taught in the West via Pema Chödrön — Tibetan Buddhism (lojong / mind training)
A living religious practice, not a secular technique; teach it with its name, lineage, and gravity intact.

Another privacy-contained depth-3 practice: self-guided, with the cautions carrying the containment. Where metta wishes well from a distance, tonglen takes the suffering in — its courage mapping is not decorative.
