The Hot Chair

Everyone sits in a ring with one chair spare. The leader reads statements and each person takes a personal position: those who agree change seats calmly, those who disagree stay, and those who do not yet know stay too. Then the leader asks some of them about their thinking — and does not comment. Nor may anyone comment on anyone else's view, only give their own; a discussion of a statement that drew strong reactions can follow afterwards, if the leader chooses.

Hold with care
  • Your position is public and physical; 'don't know' and 'disagree' look identical from the outside, which the sheet uses deliberately to give cover
  • How much is at stake depends entirely on the statements chosen, which the sheet leaves to the leader
  • The rule that the leader does not comment is the safeguard, and dropping it turns the exercise into an assessment
