Structured solo time in wild nature in three phases: preparation (practical questions, naming worries, setting intention), the quest itself — going alone to a chosen place, leaving everyday patterns behind, meeting the world through senses and open questions ("what is nature? what is my relationship to it?") — and re-entry, where the experience is deliberately integrated into everyday life. From hours to days; supported by practices like meditation or Tai Chi.

Prerequisites

  • Genuine choice of place and duration — start with hours, not days
Hold with care
  • Physical safety first: tell someone your location and return time; know the terrain and weather
  • Solitude amplifies whatever is present — unprocessed grief or anxiety may arrive; the re-entry phase exists to land it, don't skip it
  • Multi-day quests belong in organized formats with experienced guides (holding 2–3)

Origin & where it lives

Contemporary form documented by Alina Stöver (Phase 2 Toolkit); ancient practice — Wilderness solo / quest traditions across many cultures; modern ecopsychology and nature-connectedness research

Vision-quest forms are ceremonial property of specific Indigenous cultures; this secular nature quest should be named as inspired-by, not as those ceremonies.

Rated depth 3 / holding 0: the solo format is the container, and the three-phase structure (preparation, threshold, re-entry) is what makes that responsible — a ritual-container mechanism without a facilitator. change_scope includes capacity per the 2021 report's own logic: connectedness is not trained, but expanded sense of self in nature is one of the few documented paths that support it.
