People place themselves along a line from most to least in answer to a prompt — how engaged they feel, whether they consider themselves lonely or privileged, how much they earn relative to the room — and anyone may sit a prompt out. The shares afterwards are, the manual says, the most insightful part. Used from corporate feedback styles to an EPA workshop on climate despair.

Hold with care
  • The manual's example prompts include income, attractiveness, minority identity and privilege; a prompt like that is depth 3 in a room that is not ready for it, and the sit-out option must be real
  • The Perception Placement variation lets others move you along the line; the manual itself suggests allowing moves upward only when sensitivity is a concern
