Think of someone you struggle to be authentic with — the manual calls them 'the Jerk' and admits some people dislike that — and embody them while your partner tries to relate to them authentically; exchange impact; brief your partner on the person; then they embody the Jerk and you try. Intense, the manual says, and useful for understanding the people we cannot quite reach.

Hold with care
  • The person embodied is often a parent — the manual's own example is 'my dad' — and stepping into them can bring up more than frustration
  • The manual suggests giving the instructions step by step rather than all at once, which also keeps the facilitator close to each pair
