A ritual structure for honoring pain for the world. The circle is divided into quadrants holding symbolic objects — a stone (fear), dead leaves (sorrow), a stick (anger), an empty bowl (emptiness/deprivation). One at a time, participants step in, take up an object, and speak their truth; the group witnesses without response. Formal opening and closing frame the ritual and dedicate the pain as testimony to care for the world.

Prerequisites

  • Group has moved through gratitude/opening practices first (Spiral sequencing)
  • Genuinely voluntary participation — witnessing without speaking is a full way to take part
  • Clear confidentiality agreement
Hold with care
  • Deliberately opens grief, fear, anger and despair; facilitator must be able to welcome strong affect without rescuing or shutting it down
  • Not for groups with no exit option (mandatory trainings) or acute crisis situations
  • Closing and integration are structurally part of the ritual — never truncate them
  • WTR guidance: facilitate only after experiencing it as a participant

Origin & where it lives

Joanna Macy — The Work That Reconnects (Spiral stage: Honoring Our Pain for the World)

Carried by a living facilitator community with explicit guidance that facilitators should have participated before leading; honoring that apprenticeship norm is part of using the tool with integrity.

The directory's calibration exemplar for depth 4 / holding 3 / established trust: the ritual works precisely because the container is strong enough for what it invites. change_scope includes `capacity` in the 2021 report's sense — connectedness is not trained by an exercise, but an experience like this can reorganize one's relationship to the world when embedded in ongoing work.
