Council (Circle with Talking Piece)
Also known as: Way of Council, circle practice
A circle process with a talking piece: only the holder speaks, everyone else practices devoted listening. Guidelines — speak from the heart, listen from the heart, be spontaneous and lean, speak stories rather than abstractions. Builds authentic speaking, witnessing, and group belonging; usable as a regular community rhythm or a deep-dive session.
Prerequisites
- Confidentiality agreement; the circle only works if what is spoken stays
- Hold guidelines gently (Inner Pathways' own note) — policing kills the field; modeling carries it
- Personal stories can go deep fast; the facilitator's job is pace and closing, not steering content
- Passing without speaking is full participation

Origin & where it lives
Codified as 'Way of Council' by Jack Zimmerman & Virginia Coyle (Ojai Foundation) — Council/circle forms with roots in many Indigenous and traditional community practices
Circle councils exist in many cultures; the modern Way of Council explicitly acknowledges Indigenous roots. Name that inheritance and hold the form with corresponding respect rather than as a mere meeting format.

One of the most cross-pollinated forms in this territory — LUCSUS's Sustainability and Inner Transformation course uses councils, WTR workshops use circle rounds, and Jordan's scaffolds echo it as a meeting element.
