Sitting in a ring, a pen is passed to the left with a fixed exchange — 'here you are', 'what is it?', 'a pen', 'thank you' — but each new passer has forgotten what it is and must ask back down the line, so the question travels backward before the answer can travel forward. Meanwhile a paper is going the other way with the same ritual, and where the two meet the person in the middle is fielding both chains at once.
